Southern Cross Austereo – Newcastle
The new office and studios for Southern Cross Austereo in Newcastle are located with commanding views of the harbour and the site of the former steelworks. When selecting a design theme for the production booths and on-air studios we chose to reference the Hunter region coal industry and the history of steel production.
Internal production booths and IT rooms are clad in ribbed steel that recalls the shipping containers to be found in every port. The on-air studios are wrapped in a combination of coal black metal or rusted steel panels.
The courtyard theme for the boardroom and adjoining staff breakout area is more hospitality oriented. A timber pergola with hanging plants and an “ivy” covered wall create the illusion of a garden, with a patterned floor that recalls large flagstones. Stepped plywood platforms provide extra seating for large gatherings.
